and my speech and my message were not in plausible words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, that your faith might not rest in the wisdom of men but in the power of God. (1 Corinthians 2:4-5 ESV)
The word evangelism can frighten many, Christian and non-Christian alike. When some Christians hear this word, they immediately think of the litany of verses to memorize, the catchy acrostics, or maybe the many rebuttals needed for their apologetic repertoire.
These connotations tend to frighten us because we believe that the words we use are what brings the person to a saving knowledge of the Lord. In essence, the power is in the words, that is, the “right” words. If we say the wrong thing or mix up the order a person could wind up in Hell because of us! Is this really what evangelism is all about? Paul tells us that it isn’t.
Evangelism is about letting the Holy Spirit do the work. Paul didn’t use lofty words or wisdom when he shared the Gospel of Jesus (1 Corinthians 2:1). He also didn’t try to wow them with apologetics, but shared the death of Jesus and what it meant for them (1 Corinthians 2:2).
When we don’t rely on ourselves to share the good news, we in turn rely on the power of God, which can do much more than we can. We shouldn’t be afraid to share the gospel, because the power of God in our lives should be evident to those around us. They not only need to hear it, but see it.
