Mat 21:25 The baptism of John--from where was it? From heaven or from men? And they reasoned and argued with one another, If we say, From heaven, He will ask us, Why then did you not believe him?Mat 21:26 But if we say, From men--we are afraid of and must reckon with the multitude, for they all regard John as a prophet.
We have all been told “the truth hurts” and will probably hear it a couple more times in our lifetime. It usually happens after we are told of some blaring sin in our life we choose to ignore. The truth tends to pierce our soul and show us our deficiencies.
We can learn from the priests and elders and how they reacted to the truth. In their thought process that they didn’t want to deal with the truth, which was Jesus teaching with the authority of God (Matthew 21:23). They could either say John was a prophet and then have to admit that what he said of Jesus was true (John 1:29), or say he was just a man and make those around them mad. So, what do they do? They decide to play dumb (Matthew 21:27).
We can often play dumb as the priests and elders did. As we read God’s word we are confronted with the truth. The truth can hurt as it pierces our soul (Hebrews 4:12). But, we may still not embrace the truth. Instead, we may choose to continue to hide from the truth and make excuses. This might look like seeking someone out to agree with us or, praying to God hoping he will change his mind or, any other route that makes us content. In the end, we are running from the truth instead of embracing it and letting it change us from the inside out.
